This Saturday 25 of November there was a huge walk-out in Oaxaca in support of APPO. The main objectives of the demonstration were two, to call for the immediate resignation of Ulises Ruiz (once again) and to surround the federal police, who barricaded themselves in the city centre, to put some pressure on them to get away of the city.

Things were all wrong and as soon as the walkers came round near by the police they were attacked. That’s how Saturday clash started. According to ‘el universal’s’ chronology things happened like this:
1. By 16:00 hours the walk-out started to
come near the city centre and closed some of the streets to cut the way out to the federal police.
2. Between 17:06 and 17:17 APPO and police forces started firing each other, fireworks and teargas, respectively.
3. 17:54 the fighting intensifies, two houses are burned. Teargas covers
the entire city centre.4. 18:15 the police uses antiriot tanks to disperse protesters who go back to Santo Domingo area.
5. By 18:24 Flavio Sosa (APPO leader) declares the situation out of control and asks APPO followers to retreat in order to reorganise themselves. People fighting the police told Flavio to shut up and go down to fight with them. Flavio left the place and said ‘APPO declares the situation out of

control’.6. By 19:19 the federal police occupy plaza de Santo Domingo which was controlled by APPO. Before leaving APPO members set fire to whatever they left behind.
Later on the injured from both sides were taken to the Red Cross in the city. Radio Universidad reported that while police were attended, APPO people were denied attention. This is not uncommon in Oaxaca now there are
several testimonials that point out this kind of discriminatory behaviour by the Red Cross services. The threee pictures below are from 'el universal' and show in the first place a journalist from 'el financiero' a mexican news paper who got hit in the battle. in the second place is the high court building which was set on fire. And finally the hotel camino real building which was also set on fire.

Right after the clashes, last Sunday Ulises walked around what was a battlefield a day before. This behaviour only show how desperate Ulises is to force APPO to react with violence against him. This in turn would be the excuse federal government needs to send army forces to further repress Oaxacans.

Surrounded by federal policemen, his paramilitary men, state police force, two helicopters, and pri-supporters, Ulises claimed that ‘everything is coming to normal in Oaxaca’. He further said that the 160 detainees from previous day battle were going to be prosecuted and that they were to be punished with all the severity of the law. Again he disqualified APPO and put them as Atenco’s and Panchos Villas (People from Atenco were brutally repressed in May 3rd 2006 and Pancho Villa is a leftist group associated with violence).
As to the numbers Ulises also gave a contradictory version. According to him there were no injured, according to the Red Cross there were at least 53 that required to be hospitalised, but there were many more off hospitals. At least 10 persons were firearm injured. About 40 cars were burned and there is no exact number of buildings.
Despite being highly protected by police and pri-supportes alike, Ulises couldn’t avoid some people to shout at him ‘Resign Ulises, we want Peace!’. When he was questioned about people being kidnapped and tortured, Ulises strongly denied that, and then he open the possibility by saying, ‘if that were the case, the legal procedures are there’.
