Some leaders of APPO were arrested after giving a press conference in Mexico City.

Flavio Sosa, his brother Horacio, Ignacio Garcia and Marcelino Coache were arrested by PFP and AFI (the Mexican FBI,… well more or less), after giving a press conference in which they announced that talks with the ministry of interior were to be re-established. They were arrested when travelling in a taxi at Insurgentes avenue. Right after they were taken to Almoloya, a top-security prison in the State of Mexico.

This has become a pattern for almost all the detainees who have been captured after the clashes on last November 25. So far about 140 persons were transferred from Oaxaca to other states such as Nayarit and Tamaulipas (in the north), making it difficult for relatives to visit them.

With the appointment of Ramírez Acuña as minister of the interior, Calderon Backs up the repression that has been happening not only in Oaxaca but in the whole country. We have to remember that Ramirez has been accused of torture and repression back when he ruled Jalisco.

The general view that panista government has of protestors is that of an unlawful group of people with evil purposes. It can be said that they only see two types of Mexicans. On the one hand, they regard as the good ones to those that fully support Calderon or at least keep shut when it comes to fight for political rights such as having crystal clear elections.

On the other hand, they tend to disqualify everything else as criminals who dare to disagree with the so-called institutions. In that regard APPO protestors who took over the streets to ask for Ulises resignation are but criminals that have to be severely punished. In addition, almost every social movement has been criminalised. For example, Atenco’s people who suffered the brutal repression back in May resulting in at least two people death, others arrested and women raped by policemen. Miners from Michoacan where also said to be against the law despite the fact that Mexican law recognises their right to go on strike. Some workers resulted killed there.

In addition, Mexican television, which belongs to two families, has done every effort to link APPO with Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO). The reason is simple; they started a campaign blaming on AMLO for all the social disorder prevailing in the country. Waste to say that all AMLO supporters are regarded as criminals despite the fact that in every single demonstrations against the electoral fraud not even a wall has been graffiti painted. After all, we are talking of the same Mexican television for whom the massacres of 68, and early 70s did not even exist.

So what is next for APPO, in our view there will be a fierce prosecution of all the leaders, as the detention of Sosa demonstrates. Furthermore, we believe that AMLO supporters will start to be linked with violence and unrest. In doing so, people could react violently, that is what government hopes for. The good thing in this story is that neither people in Oaxaca nor AMLO supporters countrywide regard violence as a valid mean. Instead they have show responsibility by avoiding the usage of firearms at whatever cost, even their own lives and freedom. Will this attitude last?
