Lopez Obrador starts own TV show

By Duncan Kennedy

The man who narrowly lost Mexico's presidential election is launching his own late night TV programme to overcome what he says is media bias against him.

Air time on the show, which launches on Tuesday, is being paid for by Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's own supporters.

They say the mainstream Mexican media has ignored Mr Lopez Obrador and the left wing movement he represents.

Mr Lopez Obrador has never accepted his defeat in Mexico's presidential run-off against Felipe Calderon in July 2006.

Cheap slot

He says he was beaten by fraud. So angry was he, he declared himself Mexico's legitimate president.

Now he's going one stage further - claiming he has been ignored by what he calls Mexico's right wing television stations and newspapers, he is launching a weekly television programme to put what he says is the alternative point of view.

Called "The Truth Will be Told", the half-hour broadcast is being transmitted every Tuesday at 0100 (0700 GMT).

As it is being paid for by Mr Lopez Obrador's backers, they had little choice but to take one of the cheapest air times of the day.

Mr Lopez Obrador says he will use the programme to highlight the shortcomings of the country's Conservative president, Felipe Calderon, even though Mr Calderon has since adopted many of the policies of Mr Lopez Obrador.

Although its middle-of-the-night time slot might not be a ratings winner, even among his own supporters, Mr Lopez Obrador believes it is the only way his agenda of helping the nation's poor will stand any chance of exposure.

My comment on the above,....

In the first place, there is no clarity for Mexicans as to exactly who won or who lost last presidential election. Maybe Mr. Duncan Kennedy has a privileged source of information. However I believe that is not the case, and he is only sticking to what Mexican authorities say on that matter. By the way those authorities are exactly the ones who carried out both frauds, the one to the democratic process and the electoral back in July. Furthermore, it is non sense Mr. Kennedy assertion that ‘he declared himself Mexico’s legitimate president’. Waste to remember that after the pan party and its allies cheated on the election Andres Manuel and his supporters had several public meetings in Mexico City square. There all of them voted for recognising AMLO as the legitimate president of Mexico. Calderon became the appointed president, in the sense that he was appointed by a reduced number of noticeable people.

Next Image shows the pupular support AMLO has, this photo is from November 20th. Hence AMLO is the popular president of Mexico.

On the other hand, the below photo shows how little support Calderon has, he had to enter parliament by the back door and be backed by the presidential guards in a kind of mini coup d'etat,... hence he is the appointed president,...

and finally the below photo shows people protesting against calderon swering in at the parliament. It can be clearly seen that without the antiriot police, special forces and presidential guards, Calderon could never be appointed.

In the second place, Mexican television enterprises are only two and they behave accordingly, as a cartel which largely benefits from its political relations with ruling groups. I would be interesting that Mr. Kennedy informed British public about the black propaganda campaign before the election in July and the justificatory campaign right afterwards the fraud had happened. It also would be insightful if he talks about all the bias in Mexican media against people who is still defending their right to have clear elections demonstrating by taking on the streets. Another good opportunity to test the Mexican media credibility is the biased coverage they do of the APPO, stereotyping them of being a violent unlawful group.

In third place, as a matter of example, few days ago Mr. Jose Gutierrez Vivo who is a very well known communicator faced threats from Calderon government. He was asked to stop talking about Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, and further he was asked to start passing good comments on Calderon government. Otherwise, he was said, he will face some kind of punishment. So how would anyone expect that all the government favoured communicators give equal treatment to AMLO and Calderon?

Perhaps, Mr. Kennedy should report of all the alternative media’ boost up especially on the internet mainly from citizens with no political party alienation.
